What is Waterfall?
A waterfall is an area where water flows over a vertical drop or a series of steep drops in the course of a stream or river. Waterfalls also occur where meltwater drops over the edge of a tabular iceberg or ice shelf.
India has a wide variety of waterfalls. Some of the significant waterfalls in India are Jog Falls, Dhuandhar Falls, Chitrakoot Falls, Kutralam Falls, Rajrappa Falls, and Hundru Falls. An area of a stream or river where waterfalls over a vertical drop or a succession of steep drops is called a waterfall.
Types of Waterfalls
- Ledge waterfall: Water descends vertically over a vertical cliff, maintaining partial contact with the bedrock.
- Cataract: A large, powerful waterfall.
- Horsetail: Descending water maintains some contact with bedrock.
- Plunge: Fast-moving water descends vertically, losing contact with the bedrock surface.
- Block: Water descends from a relatively wide stream or river.
- Multi-step: A series of waterfalls one after another of roughly the same size each with its own sunken plunge pool.
- Segmented: Distinctly separate flows of water form as it descends.
- Cascade: Water descends a series of rock steps.
- Punchbowl: Water descends in a constricted form and then spreads out in a wider pool.
- Tiered: Water drops in a series of distinct steps or falls.
- Fan: Water spreads horizontally as it descends while remaining in contact with bedrock.
- Moulin: A moulin is a waterfall in a glacier.
List of Highest Waterfalls in India
- Kunchikal Falls in Shimoga District Karnataka is the highest waterfall in India with a height of 1493 feet.
- The highest waterfall in India (Kunchikal Falls) is formed by the Varahi River.
- Dudhsagar falls is known as the ‘Sea of milk’, it is formed from the Mandovi River.
- Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand is known as the city of waterfalls in India.
- Nohkalikai Falls located near Cherrapunji is the tallest plunge waterfall in India. Its height is 1115 feet (340 metres) and is one of the wettest places on Earth.

- Nohsngithiang Falls (also known as the Seven Sisters Waterfalls or Mawsmai Falls) is a seven-segmented waterfall located 1 kilometre south of Mawsmai village in East Khasi Hills district in the Indian state of Meghalaya.

Barehipani Falls
- Dropping from a height of 399 m, Barehipani Falls is located inside the Simlipal National Park in Mayurbhanj, Odisha.
- This two-tiered waterfall originates from the Budhabalanga River and makes its way through the rocky terrains of the mighty Meghasani mountain.
- This is the second-highest waterfall in India and attracts trekkers and nature enthusiasts from across the country.
- It is one of the most attractive tourist attractions in Odisha.
Nohkalikai Falls
- On the third spot is the Nohkalikai Falls in Meghalaya.
- Falling from a height of 340 m, this gorgeous waterfall is located near Cherrapunji in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya.
- The destination is characterized by heavy rainfall, root bridges, and plenty of nature.
- It lies about 5 km away from Cherrapunji town. Tumbling down from a height of 1,115 ft, it creates a large blue-green plunge pool at the bottom.
Nohsngithiang Falls
- Dropping from a height of 315 m, Nohsngithiang Falls in the East Khasi Hills district is the fourth highest waterfall in India.
- A gem of nature with seven streams, Nohsngithiang waterfall plunges over the limestone cliffs of the Khasi hills and is also referred to as Seven Sister Falls.
- The seven segments of the falls exemplify the seven sister states of north-eastern states namely Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland, Tripura.
- The waterfall is nearly a kilometer from the famous Mawsmai village in Meghalaya and is thus known as the Mawsmai Falls.
Dudhsagar
- A tired waterfall on the Mandovi River, located in Goa near the border with Karnataka
- 60 km from Panaji

Chitrakoot Falls

Jog Falls
- The highest untiered (Single Plunge ) falls (253m) of India, located on the Sharavati River in the Shimoga District of Karnataka

- An HEP Project(Hydro Electric Project) has been eastablished near it.
Thalaiyar Falls
- Thalaiyar Waterfalls, also recognized as the “rat tail falls” due to its distinctive shape, in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu.
- Its remarkable width adds to its allure, and it’s widely acknowledged for the challenging terrain and mysterious caverns that surround it.
Hundru Falls
- A waterfall in Jharkhand, India is called Hundru Falls. It may be found in the Ranchi district.
- It is the 34th-highest waterfall in India.
- The varied rock formations that have emerged as a result of erosion brought on by the steady flow of water have enhanced the area’s beauty.
Dhuandhar Falls
- The world-famous Marble Rocks are where the Narmada River narrows before it plunges into the Dhuandhar waterfall.
- It is situated in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur.
- One can hear the noise of the plunge, which produces a bouncing ball of mist, from a great distance away.
- Rocks made of white marble appear silvery when illuminated by moonlight.
Rajrappa Falls
- Located in the Hazaribagh District where Bhairve (Bhera) joins the river Damodar, falling from a height of 30 ft.
- In the vicinity lies a famous temple called Chinnamasta Temple.
